The DISCUS 2 is Schempp-Hirth's latest introduction to the standard-class sailplane market. The principal difference in the "new" DISCUS is the polyhedral (multiple dihedral) of the wing, which makes the DISCUS 2 easier to circle in thermals. Tilo Holighaus was at the controls of the DISCUS 2 on its first flight at the Hahnweide on 3 April 1998. Already the new DISCUS has rung up its first competition successes by winning the Hahnweide Cup and the German and English Championships. No doubt these will not be its last contest successes. In this model we reduced the dimensions of the full-size machine by a factor of 1:3.3. As a result the DISCUS 2 is a candidate for SCALE glider competitions if appropriate cockpit details are fitted. Careful selection of airfoils has endowed the model with a great performance and excellent flying characteristics. Control response is so good that it is possible to circle gently in weak thermals using just rudder and elevator. Building effort is reduced to a minimum by the kit's high level of pre-fabrication, including wing panels skinned in a single piece, with pre-sanded leading edges and factory-fitted airbrake boxes. Naturally it is also possible to install a retractable undercarriage and an aero-tow mechanism. We have adopted a clever method of tailplane attachment which does not involve exposed screws on the top surface ofthe tailplane. The sleeves for the 16 mm Ø joiner rod are factory-fitted in the wing roots. The wings feature accurately machined slots for the ailerons and airbrakes. The rudder linkage is based on closed-loop cables, as in the original machine.
