Model Helicopters are not toys
and should be treated with the greatest of care during assembly and in
the
operational maintenance to ensure
safe operation.
This is by
no means a beginners kit and it should be understood that the end user
have an extensive knowledge
of building and flying large model
helicopters before building/purchasing this kit.
Welcome again to another on-line build up.This
build-up will help illustrate the procdures for this expert
level kit. You may chose to do things different
but these pages will guide you through the basics of
preparing our kit for flight. This is a
build-up of the prototype body, production bodies are white
gelcoat finish and have some improvments over
this original body.Enjoy and feel free to e-mail us or
call with any questions you may have while you
build your model. Much effort and expense has been
invested in this model to produce a top quality
product and we are here to support you and ensure your
enjoyment of this wonderful model by ScaleJet
International.
......
We start of course by cutting out all
openings(most openings are factory cut) and washing the body down with
white vinager and soap to get all the release
agents off and cutting dust out of the body. The next step is fit cowls
and pre-fit doors. There are a number of ways
you may chose to hang/attach doors but I chose to use Robart gear
door hinges trimmed down to obtiain the stock
hidden hinge look. Two hinges for each door including two each
for main landing gear doors does the trick nicely
and securely.
On the cockpit doors and passenger doors
it is nessacary to angle or bend the hinges to obtain a straight path for
the hinges to open on curved surface...much like
Huey doors are done. Small slots allow almost 90 degree operation
which is nice for access later. 1/4" wooden mounting
tabs are shaped to the inside of the jambs to provide flat
mounting surfaces for the hinges to attach to.
Take your time here, tack with CA glue then once all is fit, glue them
in with HYSOL or BVM type epoxy.
On the main gear door area this
is not needed as this area is Kevlar/Carbon enhanced and opening path is
on
a straight line. Gear doors can be bolstered
with 3/16" balsa to add a more scale appearance. In all cases it will be
nessacary to trim the inner portions of hinges
as shown in the cockpit and passenger door areas. (See photo below).
.
This is the prototype body (production bodies
are white gel-coat). Here you can see how the use of the Robart
hinges are installed. Slots cut into the jambs
only allow full opertation for the gear doors. Rough blasa work can
also be seen going into the gear doors. This is
optional for appearance only.
Here is a better shot of the hidden hinge
installation. Wood is dry fit at this point and there a few pieces
left to fit such as the servo mount for front
gear. I like to tack the wood in place with CA then follow later
once all is well with BVM or HYSOL epoxy.
....................
Here you can see the bends in the lower
hinges to maintain a straight line in the swing path of door. Here
the top supports are fitting to the body support
bulkhead (inner ring). Later we add the upper mechanic
braces off these areas to the mechanics. This
creates a lot of support for the entire body and mechanics.
......
This area has the kevlar/carbon reinforcments
to make the gear area very stiff and strong. Shown here is the
main retract bulkhead test fitted and only a
little sanding was needed to get it perfectly snug without distorting
the body. The servos in this picture are to operate
the gear doors themselves, standard servos do the job nicely
with 70mm pushrods with links. This is actually
a 1/4" thick bulkhead with machined reliefs that make it very light
but still very strong.
Note: The relief side of the main
gear bulkhead will actually face the REAR of the helicopter.(Shown in upcoming
pages). We find this is best for landing gear
strut function! reliefs must face REAR of helicopter.
If you like you can download the video
to see how the gear doors work here Gear Door
Video.
(These will be slowed and timed using a gear
door sequencer once final set-up and gear installation is complete)
