The AGUSTA A119 »KOALA« is a general-purpose
single-engined turbine helicopter, based on the familiar twin-engined A109.
In contrast to the A109 the Koala only has one turbine and a robust skid
landing gear instead of the fixed or retractable wheeled undercarriage.
The roomy cabin provides space for up to seven passengers, one tonne of
freight or - in the rescue version - two stretchers. The Pratt & Whitney
PT6B-37A turbine generates a take-off power of 1002 BHP, and a continuous
output of 872 BHP, giving the »KOALA« a superb performance.
With this fuselage kit the MICRO STAR 400 mini electric helicopter can
be transformed into a semi-scale model of the AGUSTA A119 »KOALA«.
The MICRO STAR should first be thoroughly test-flown and trimmed for flight.
Its chassis, complete with tail boom and braces, but without canopy and
skid landing gear, is then screwed to a lightweight plywood base plate,
to which a semi-scale broad-based skid landing gear is also attached. The
two lightweight vacuum-moulded fuselage shells enclose this assembly. The
shells are glued together at the tail end only; at the front they are held
together with strips of tape, so that the chassis can be removed from the
fuselage easily at any time for maintenance work. The flight battery can
be changed through an opening in the bottom of the fuselage, without removing
the fuselage shell itself. The fuselage shells are vacuum-moulded from
transparent plastic, and are designed to be painted on the outside. Pre-cut
self-adhesive masks for the windows are supplied. As you would expect,
the maximum flight time per battery charge varies according to the model"s
set-up and the pilot"s flying style. The model does weigh around 100 g
more than the basic MICRO STAR 400 model, so reduced flying times must
be expected.
